Community Post: Operation Cold Shoulder

NEWS MEDIA ADVISORY
For Immediate Release – February 15, 2007

Wake-Up Wendy Wednesday
A Rally to Launch Operation Cold Shoulder

Wednesday, 21 February 2007
12 noon to 1 pm in De La Guerra Plaza, downtown Santa Barbara

SANTA BARBARA – Organizers expect hundreds of people to rally and show support for the newsroom employees of the Santa Barbara News-Press. Nearly 50 writers, editors, and other staff have been unfairly terminated from their jobs or have resigned out of principle since the well-known meltdown of this community institution last July. This demonstration will be an opportunity for people to advocate for worker rights and a credible free press that actually reports on itself. Creative picket signs and costumes are encouraged.

Speakers will include:
· Brian Barnwell, Santa Barbara City Councilmember
· Elizabeth Robinson, KCSB radio and community TV journalist
· Bill Connell, the Hot Dog Man
· Kathleen Rodriguez, sports fan
· John Zant, 38-year veteran sports reporter recently terminated
· Newsroom Employees with personal stories, updates, and announcements

This rally aims to inspire action. Operation Cold Shoulder will be launched as a community response to the continuingly abhorrent behavior practiced by the News-Press, such as terminating loyal employees who write the truth, refusing to meet with neutral community leaders, intimidating local small businesses, suing other journalists doing their job, declining to publish well-reasoned but contrary opinions, allowing the important news to go unreported, and other insults. The News-Press is violating the public trust as part of its business plan, and now needs to be shunned and given the Cold Shoulder until it becomes the valuable and meaningful newspaper and community asset it once was only 8 months ago.

Operation Cold Shoulder includes these and other actions that everyone is encouraged to follow:
  • Continue cancellations of newspaper subscriptions.
  • Urge advertisers to stop buying ads in the newspaper and at the News-Press controlled radio station, KZSB-AM.
  • Find the news in other newspapers and media, such as radio, TV, web sites, and blogs.
  • Suggest that individuals, public agencies, community organizations, and political leaders stop sending news releases and announcements to the News-Press, and stop giving interviews and returning calls and emails.
  • Ask the public to stop placing classified ads, calendar listings, garage sale notices, wedding announcements, and obituaries in the News-Press and instead place them in other publications.
  • Request non-profits NOT to invite the News-Press society-page writers to their charity events.
  • Encourage news sources, individuals, and organizations NOT to participate in any of the KZSB radio programs, activities, or public service announcements.
  • Write letters to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) expressing concern that the News-Press controls a radio station and a newspaper in the same town.
  • Raise awareness that the News-Press owns and controls the other local publications Goleta Valley Voice, El Mexicano, and Blue Edge Magazine.
  • Picket every Wednesday at 12 noon through the end of March.

Operation Cold Shoulder and this rally are a community-based campaign separate from the Union activities of the newsroom employees. This campaign is by local people concerned about the continuing decline of this daily newspaper of record for the Santa Barbara area.

  2. I'm connected to Wendy and could be directly affected by the Cold Shoulder. But you know what? Do it. Please. Call me a coward, but I'll collect my paycheck from that nightmare as long as I can, then move on when the time comes.

This is an evil woman, and she must be stopped. Go for it.

  3. The Daily Sound newspaper has 28 pages today, a record. They wrote long on the anti-war demonstraton held at UCSB yesterday, as well as covered the nuances of SBCAG.

Their web site still is a pain, though.

  4. Do people have the courage or willpower not to have anything to do with the Newspress any more?

That is really what that cold shoulder plan seems to be all about.

  5. kind of overly ambitious don't you think to predict "hundreds" will be at this rally.....if the past couple weeks are indicative it will be more like two dozen familiar faces..........

    ReplyDelete
  6. Thanks for the idea list. Not all of us can go to the Wednesday rally but want to show our support.

I've already been working on the last point of raising awareness about McCaw's ownership of the other publications, found my local news over at edhat, here, the Indy, and SB Sound (although their website has a lot to be desired). I'd work on getting others to cancel but all but one of my friends and family have already done so. I think they will cancel now with Zant gone however.

Many years ago I worked on getting advertisers to cancel their ads and move to other stations with some success. I would like to see a concentrated effort to do this. Perhaps you could help by listing advertisers on the blog?

Anyone have a link to whom to write at the FCC? Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  7. No, not overly ambitious. The past two weeks were not rallies and had different intents.

  9. yeah Anon 7:59AM, but, Bill Connell too...now there is a real show stopper!

  10. I found these video links to Barnwell talking about the Newspress. Seems like pretty strong comments to me.

No videos found of Elizabeth Robinson, though.

  11. Could Brian Barnwell be any more incoherent? A hand few people in the Plaza doesn’t make for community support. There are a handful of reporters who should start looking for some type of work and move on. We’ve still got the Independent, the Daily Sound, KEYT, etc. It’s over!

    ReplyDelete
  12. Anonymous 12:48 and before that and before that and before that…

I find your argument intriguing. You say that a handful of people does not make community support and that these are just a few disgruntled employees.

So I’m curious, why are you so invested in this? Why does it irk you so? If it’s over, and no one cares, why do you? Just let those people write away in the blogosphere where no one (as you say) will pay attention. Certainly no one will miss your contribution (note no plural here).

    ReplyDelete
  13. so now Brian "buildout" Barnwell is not cowering? oh right, he's coming up for reelection. yawwnnn.

  14. Here's a partial list of NP advertisers. My guess is that boycotting them is not a good solution. Until recently, the NP was our newspaper of record, so it made sense that every business who advertises would advertise there.

I think calling these folks and asking them not to advertise until the union issue is resolved would be the best tactic.

Some of the businesses listed here may not be current advertisers, and some may have gone out of business as I got these names from several lists, and there will be duplicate listings. But all have at one time advertised in the NP. This is not a full list by any means, but it's a place to start.

    Enjoy!

  15. Has anyone every called for an actual boycott of advertisers?
    A real Boycott?
    I do not think so.

The list of actions I am reading under the Cold Shoulder approach indicates simply to "urge advertisers" to stop buying ads in the newspaper and at its radio station.

That very long list of alleged advertisers is in no apparent sequence and has many errors, especially to indicate when any ads were placed. Buying ads last June and earlier was not a problem. That list almost seems irresponsible and misleads on such an important issue with such high stakes.

Maybe they will fix this by the time of that rally described for this post?

    ReplyDelete
  16. To Cabalista, the list above is not of "alleged advertisers," these are actual advertisers in the News-Press.

The reason I posted this list is because I've read 10 or 15 posts in the past few months of people asking for a list of advertisers to call, as though not having a list was hold them back from taking action. Thus, the list.

If you want to put these advertisers in a certain order, be my guest.

As to when, exactly, each advertised in the NP, that would be hard information to glean, and the wait for that information would be another reason for inaction, I fear.

If the idea is to contact advertisers and urge them not to give Wendy money until this mess is resolved, then I think this list is a good place to start.

If you have a better organized list, please post it.

  17. Looks like this is going to fizzle out before it even starts.

  18. Dream on.

I can only conclude that all this anonymous criticism, devoid of anything specific, just means that some people in the castle/bubble have something to worry about with a few hundred motivated people outside on the Plaza green next Wednesday.
