Great Quote from the Daily Sound

In writing about tonight's fundraiser for the over litigated ex-News-Press Managing Editor Jerry Roberts, The Santa Barbara Daily Sound reports that political consultant Gail Kaufman says "Ann Coulter will appear on the television hit program Queer Eye for the Straight Guy before McCaw’s paper ever wins a Pulitzer Prize". Ouch.

Two points:

--Wrong Way Armstrong was the recepient of the California Newspaper Publishers Association "Best Opinion Pages" award for 2005; quite a travesty, IMHO.

--Calling that line funny is like admiring Buddy Winston's wit-challenged scribblings.

--Biff Arden

Buddy Winston is a downer. Creepy choice. I don't get that one at all.

Michael Seabaugh and Barney Brantingham get replaced by Winston and Schlessinger?

That IS sad. But who reads the filler in the NP these days anyway. Might as well not even run either of them.

There is No truth to the rumor that Craig McCaw has made a donation to the fund, is there? I'm sure it would have been news if he had. and would the NP had covered it, Local news, local interest??

The only thing keeping Coulter and McCaw apart are their politics. Coulter would have been a more interesting read than "Dr." Laura regardless.

Although my intention is to update the recap/review of Dr. Laura's nearly unbearable column only on Sundays, today the blog features a special Thursday edition of the:

Anon. 11:03, here is the section of "Dr." Laura's column that you requested:
"My second boycott is all blogs and such which permit anonymous postings. For example, go to www.independent.com and see for yourself how, under the darkness of anonymity, people feel free to give "opinions" that often go right over the edge into slander and downright meanness. Same with the Santa Barbara blogs which spend most of their time and space on attacking everyone associated with the Santa Barbara News-Press. One of them even threw a contest: Santa Barbara's Worst People. I won fourth place . . . for what? Graffiti? Mugging? Armed robbery? Child abuse?

My main question is why even have that kind of contest in the first place?

The answer: gives an outlet to cowards and ne'er-do-wells to polish their egos by snotty little attacks on folks trying to do something of value, simply because they have a different world view.

And, none of us is anonymous.

It is these very types we all have to watch closely. Can you imagine these perpetual attackers ever really having tolerance and a diversity approach? If they ran the News-Press, would they keep me, Scott or Travis? Since they spend a lot of time salivating over the demise of the News-Press and anyone and everyone involved with it -- I think they would create their own one-sided tyranny. So much for the future of tolerance and diversity if these folks gain traction."

I think it's great that she gave the Indy site a plug!

thanks for the excerpt ne'er-do-well

I haven't ever paid attention to her writings- if this piece is typical, she doesn't appear very intelligent nor for that matter, at all skilled as a writer

It has always been interesting to me why "Dr. Laura" has the following that she does. Sylvia Plath said it:

"Every woman adores a fascist,
The boot in the face, the brute
Brute heart of a brute like you"

Authoritarianism is very appealing to some.

Still, for "Dr. Laura" to attempt to avoid "mean and stupid" is an excellent first step. Always best to shine the light inward first.
