Circuit City Stabbing Not Much in the News?
A faithful reader sent in a report of hearing about another stabbing near Circuit City and said KEYT News had a brief uninformative blip on their 6:00 pm Saturday newscast. He heard about it through an interesting Santa Barbara police scanner feed website strangely called The Way of the Gun and wondered why it hadn't shown up just about anywhere else....any news on this from any of our other readers?

I heard it too on KCOY and tried to find more info, but it didn't happen on State Street, so....
Duh... this is Santa Barbara we aim to pleeeeeze tourists and the ELITE. If some rich punk machine guns his neighborhood, would that make the news here? Not if it isn't leaked.
Maybe...there's also the fact that there are probably a lot of stabbings that happen that don't meet the threshold of 'gang' or other politically sensitive group. I bet this probably wasn't a murder....

Looks like everyone al lthe media outlets dropped the ball in reporting on this. KEYT reported, stated that the police determined that it was gang related but the report really didn't have much detail. During the report it aired a statement that by a police representative that left me thinking that the police representative was dismissive about citizens concerns about this cyclic violent direction. I guess also the point is that there was a lack of reporting by every media outlet....but the News Press should have been the number one source for an article on this.

Two stabbings in one week isn't anything to be overly concerned about according to the police. KEYT last night.
From EdHat, a stabbing in Carpinteria on Friday night, missed by all local media except Channel 12, which reported:
Police arrested two people for attempted murder of a 15-year-old...who was stabbed in carpinteria last night (Friday).
Police tell us it happened around nine-thirty last night at Aliso school in carpinteria. officers say they received a report of a group of kids fighting on the school property.
When police arrived, they found a boy who was stabbed he was taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Witnesses told police they saw a kids leaving the fight in a car.
Soon after, police located the car and detained four people involved in the stabbing. 20 year old Javier Magdaleno and 21 year old Andrew Martinez were arrested they gang members from Ventura the victim is a member of a gang in Carpinteria.
This is the 5th stabbing in Santa Barbara County this year involving juveniles.

So, where was Channel 3 and Channel 6, and the News-Suppress? Oh, News-Suppress fired their Carpinteria reporter and now has a reporter hired from a temporary agency which restricts him from leaving the office. That agency sounds worse than the Teamsters Union. Wow, the agency negotiated for their reporter not to have to ever leave the building to conduct interviews or gather news!
And all the original, illegally fired reporters wanted, via the Teamsters Union, was a wall between editorial and newsroom, and restoration of ethics and integrity. And they would dare to venture outdoors to get the news!
Yes, the News-Press SHOULD HAVE been the Number One source, just like they should have not illegally terminated unionized employees, not interjected the owner's personal opinion into news content, not filed lawsuits against other reporters reporting the news, not smeared their former editor with criminal allegations with no by-line, not ignored community requests simply to talk with them, and more and more.
Always listening to their scanners, KEYT indeed covered this incident promptly in several news stories. And in usual pattern, this still is not up at their website 2 days later.
6:05 AM: Why the N-P the number one source and not also the Sound, the other daily that advertised itself in this morning's edition as reaching 18,000 people!

Yet again we see what a loss there is with a lack of skilled/supported/and paid media workers.
I was there when it took place and it infact took place inside the Circuit City, in the men's bathroom.
Police Chief Sanchez is wrong saying it is not time for a gang injunction. Yes it is. It is not the small number of gang members who actually are violent that matter; it is the huge number of residents now living in fear in their own homes and on their own streets that should matter a heck of a lot more.
Policing is not just for catching or preventing crooks .It is for a sense of personal safety for all of us who live here. And when a few violent criminals in gangs persist and create terror of retribution, it is time to enjoin all gang activity. ASAP.
Who is feeding this nonsense to the police chief that the rights of the few (non-violent gang members) outweigh the rights of the many - all the rest of us who live in this city now considered a free for all for any sort of violent gang activity.
These are not rival foot ball teams in action or boy scout troops playing capture the flag in our neighborhoods .These are gangs, clearly identified gangs who are perpetuating revenge killings and stabbings that have no end in sight.
Cam Sanchez, enjoin all gang activity ASAP for a cool down period of at least six months.
Don't wait for the city council to tell you to do this - they are out of town too much and you never see them out walking the hoods anyway.
They don't know what is happening and how many people continue to live in fear in their own houses all over this city. Neighbors have been asking repeatedly for more police presence, from the first murder months ago and the city council responded with social programs.
Just last week after the last marijuana shop melee and stabbing, the neigbhors asked for more police presence.
I think this is the message you need to respond to -- from those actually out in the hoods who want to feel safe. Enjoin all gang activity.

I was randomly assaulted in broad daylight, midday saturday, right on Stearns Wharf.. and had a flare gun pulled on me (i didn't know the guy, and he nor I am part of a gang) I was staring out at the water strolling along the pier; then Wham!
Police showed up arrested him, booked him, and with lawyer in tow, he plead to a lesser assault charge; rather than face a felony weapons charge and was sentenced before I even found out about it on that Monday!
Meanwhile history reads, "two men fight on Saturday, no further details"
Had I been a woman, it would have made front page of the paper....somehow I believe this occurance was suppressed in the media, because it may scare tourists. Plus I am employed by the City of Santa Barbara, which could have made a good story.
Fights and assaults have been around since the creation of mankind.. whether or not they can be spun as a news story..well thats up to the media and the powers that be!
The website for Key News has an item about gang activity expanding out of Oxnard. It also says that, as usual, officers will be on the lookout for those wearing 'gang attire' during the summer events in Santa Barbara and Ventura Counties.
On that theme, isn't it time we have a set of entry and exit points on State Street during the hectic evenings of Fiesta? ID checks could be run at the gates, alleged gang members and affiliates spotted before they get into the crowd-- a filter to keep things safe.
Just think of the cages, for lack of a better word, used by the NYPD on New Years Eve. It's less of a mass of people wandering aimlessly and control is put upon the revelers from the beginning.
And, of course, shouldn't we start making the Bars that call themselves clubs begin to pay for the security and police overtime during Fiesta-- last I checked it wasn't the Courthouse, Old Mission, or Placita that profited thousands, nor any of those locations around which violence occurs.
Sorry for the ramble-- this aspect of Fiesta gets to me, that locals don't care to go downtown because of the crowding and fights.
Entrances and exits to Isla Vista got controlled to control Halloween. Perfect for Fiesta as well. I smell a big gang rumble at Fiesta in my gut.
One policeman had an excellent suggestion. Takes one to know one:
Cancel all night time activities for fiesta mercado which is where the problems are and take the same money used to support the huge police team needed to control those crowds and give ten percent of it to the non-profits running the food booths at night.
Far more cost effective. Yes, it is time for the few to suffer a bit, so the many can live in safety and security.
And it is also time for the few to control their own, so everyone can live in safety and security.
I bet this Fiesta is going to be remembered for gang trouble. Some innocent tourist gets caught in the middle or some other nonsense along those lines.
Today's Independent has an interview with the City's Chief of Police. It is not very comforting. The Chief's remarks are pleasant to read in a folksy way, but, lack any logical approach to curbing gang violence. Once bats and knives have run thier course, how long will it be before guns show up in gang fights?
