Editorial Travesty

Don't believe the rumors -- BlogaBarbara is very much alive and kicking!

I have to admit, Travesty Factswrong kind of stumped me there for awhile. The notion that Hannah-Beth Jackson would be campaigning for ultra right-wing Tom McClintock for Lt. Governor so she could run for the Senate seat she already decided against -- after much deliberation, according to news reports -- combined with the declaration that somehow Salud Carbajal will be our next Congressman, was just a wee bit too much.

But today's piece, in which Factswrong embarrassingly tries to "draft" Dr. Dan Secord to run against The Slugger for mayor, is much too worthy of comment to stay silent! Here is the gist of his incredibly compelling argument:

"The News-Press encourages Dr. Secord to consider running for mayor in the November election. Santa Barbara needs him in office because of his level-headed approach to city finances."

Factswrong is very upset by the fact that the Council has had to dip into reserves, and he can't understand why that might be happening when these are "hardly rainy days." Nevermind the state's ongoing budget crisis, including a projected $8 billion shortfall this year, or a four-year-long national recession that Bush's insane economic policies are making worse by the minute. You're right, Travesty, things are fabulous, and it's just a coincidence that cities across California are struggling with the exact same issues.

"In any case, Dr. Secord as mayor could use his office to begin a real discussion about the city living within its means."

Yes, I think the hundreds of people who are currently struggling for survival in Santa Barbara, under the crushing weight of low-wage jobs and high-cost housing, would agree that replenishing our reserves is the single most important issue facing our great city!

But lame arguments aside, the editorial fails on the most basic level. Dr. Secord did consider running for Mayor, but apparently decided against it after doing what potential candidates do: asking around to people who may support you and finding out what they think about your possible run.

It's funny that Factswrong is so desperate to have a warm body in the Mayor's election simply for the sake of a "competitive race," when everyone knows full well The Slugger's got it locked up:

"Mayor Secord? If not, is there another Santa Barbaran who will run so there's a competitive race?"

For people so supposedly concerned about fiscal responsibility, isn't it a tad hypocritical that the News-Oppress would be advocating such needless spending?

After reading the fundraising letter "the slugger" sent out this week, Nixonian is about the best way to describe her apparent state of mind. Craaaazy.

She does seem to be cracking up with all this - including this site. It's sad to watch her personal decay as well as tainting the office of mayor that Miller did so much to raise up. Jeremy and Nels what are you advising her?

Try this alternative view of the written rant by Da Mayuh Bluum:

She is so confident in being re-elected that she can afford to tell the News-Press what many, many people are thinking already. Some call that courage, not craaaazy. Consider the pathos of that newspaper endorsing a Republican politico who has no comment and whose own polling data show he would get smeared in a run for Mayor.

Some of us are trying to recover from the age of Mayor Miller and the original Iyatollah, City Administrator Tripp-Jones.

Romo and friends: at least have some class and adopt a blogger name instead of being a wimp hiding behind the Anonymous label. I am sure your friends at Davies Astroturfing can help you with the blogger registration.

Yea, perhaps I will register with some brave name, perhaps Valerio San Pascual. The Mayor, unless I am mistaken, has no opponent. If she isn't confident of winning, she is crazier than even I think she is. By the way if you are pretending to be an independant blog unassociated with the Mayors campaign, don't have her put a link to you in her nutletter.

It's Iya's fault, yeah, that's it. No it's Dan's fault, or maybe Travis, Wendy, the SB Scholarship Political Roast, yeah, that's it! Hey it's the Cops! Well, maybe its Harriet and Sandra Tripp-Jones, they never had my back! No, its Davies, the all purpose boogeyman! Its the Dems! It's the Repulicans! It can't be me! I am the Mayor bringing SB together!

Okay, everyone, let's review: All the daily paper said is that let's have a race for mayor. And Blum goes nuts-so.
Didn't we all agree not to respond to the paper so not to give them any sort of importance, and now she validates them in a rant that's a demeaning moment for the Democrats and the city. Plus she makes Travis Armstrong into a martyr/hero by making him a victim of a government offical's personal attacks. Great job, Marty. And as everyone knows by now she's coming off as homophobic as well with this bashing.

This will be the first and last post I make to this weird site.

The only reason I am posting anything at all is because my name came up in some posts.

Please leave me out of your weird dialogues. I want nothing to do with this silly stuff.

And to clarify, no I did not give Marty Blum $2,000 for her last campaign. I only gave her a thousand.

Again, please leave me out of this stupid stuff.

Life is too short to have to worry about things like this.

Ben Romo

What is with this Blum-bashing? I can only assume that a rival (Iya?) is responsible. We have enough problems with the neanderthals in our community (like Travis and Wendy) without spending time and bytes on bashing each other...
The N-P is a travesty -- and this site should be used to set things straight!

That's right. It is anybody's fault but poor Marty's. If you don't want to get dirty, stop throwing mud.

what is cracked is blum and her adviser jeremy setting up an anonymous blog to attack fellow democratic officeholders. A fundraising letter that promos an anonymous blog as proof to prove her point? c'mon.

Dear Blogabarbara Friends,

Thanks for a great site, and for giving the chatterati more to chatter about.

I'm glad that the News Press is coming under deserved public criticism, and that Mayor Blum is using her unchallenged status to say what needs to be said.

However, let's not get too bogged down in this conflict. I'd like to see more analysis of local economic, social and political issues by the main writers on this site. Let's include among the interesting and useful discussions of personalities and micro-political wrangling some broad consideration of issue like housing, living-wage, environment, education and downtown growth. Be an -alternative- to the News Press, not just a critic of it.

Thanks again, and keep up the good work!
