Quote of the Week

"I would love for someone to tell me how to get some new information out of them," said League volunteer Ann Lorimer -- as reported in the News-Press. Commenting on 2nd District Supervisorial candidates....

Wow that's a shame that a League spokeswoman would make that statement......

I'd suggest she meet one on one and start with Janet Wolf! who has been quite clear and informed about her approaches not only to the issues but to her style of serving on an elected body;

also, please read the articles in the News Press and Independent archives going back to last Nov on this race. See who's consistent, who's informed (and who's not)the N-P archives are free right now and go back many years;

There are sharp differences in this race and in these candidates, Ann---and go beyond the statements in the debates, and look into their individual histories of what they've actually DONE in their respective offices---

Janet's 11 yrs on the School Board,
Das' 2 yrs on Council, and
Dr. Secord's years on Council and on the Coastal Commission;
( in fact, the Coastal Commission website will give you his voting record!)

Go Ann, start doing your homework!!!

I was puzzled too -- not necessarily from an issue perspective but from the League's necessary objective, unbiased opinion standpoint. It's something I wouldn't want her to say if I was President of the League....

That's a shame?
You are surprised?
What are you thinking? That is an honest opinion.
It is shameful to express an honest contemporaneous observation from a person on the scene?
Yeah, okay.

SBR--you missed the point of Sara's and my post; the Forum was put on by the League of Women Voters and the woman was quoted as representing them. They're known primarily for voter education. Hence, my puzzlement at lack of information presented in her comments as a rep of LWV--no more, no less.

but hey, SBR, youre coming from a bitter perspective so of course you're looking for malicious motives;

look elsewhere

The question should have been, "How do we get some TRUE information out of them?"

Secord, Williams and Wolf have been co-opting Guzzardi since day one. Guzzardi came out strong to support Noleta. Guzzardi came out strong to work against the state housing frenzy. Guzzardi came out strong to protect agricultural lands. The other three have been slowly morphing to copy the best candidate in the race. The other three have been supported by their crony political friends to implement the copy-cat plan.

The fire union just showed how tightly they are tied to Susan Rose's apron string. To annoint Janet as the queen of public safety is about as far from reality as a Star Trek episode.

New information??? How about snapping out of the trance you're in, and seeing Guzzardi for what he is....the last, best hope to fix what's wrong with local politics!

What debate were you at! Every time i hear Das I learned something new and wonderful. Das is the only candidate talking real ideas. Janet Wolf and Joe the dispatcher should drop out and leave the field clear for a Das/ Secord showdown. I mean, how many ways can Das say, no more building, business must pay their fair share, workers get an even deal, and pro-active government is good. Not a bad message.

Bill Carson is right. Guzzardi came out strong and the rest are following. That might be fine if the followers could be counted on to stick to their new guns once elected. What are the odds?

Das may be full of new ideas, but he's like a roulette wheel, changing all the time. Red or black? Red or black? Density or preservation? Density or preservation? Work with North County or work behind the scenes to recall Brooks? Das is a gamble.

Janet may be likeable, but the worry is that her puppetmasters are the same as Susan Rose's. Like it or not, Susan Rose did a poor job of representing and pissed off a lot of constituents IN THE SECOND DISTRICT, so if Janet wants to prove herself to be able to represent, then she needs to establish that she is not part of the Susan camp, and will stand up for her constituents (read: promise to push for a rezoning moratorium and fight the mandate, then ACTUALLY DO IT)

Secord...??!!

Anonymous 8:56pm....Williams NEVER answered the MTD property question! In front of his pro-density supporters, young Mr. Williams talks about high denisty development on the MTD Ag land! In front of the League, he bobbed and weaved!

Take off your Das colored glasses and watch the replay.

This is a press release from the Wolf campaign, dated January 13, 2006.
-----------------------------------
Janet Wolf seeks “Moratorium” on
Rezonings in Unincorporated 2nd District

Janet Wolf today announced her position on rezonings in the Unincorporated 2nd District.

“As a long time resident of the Goleta Valley I have seen a disturbing trend toward what appears to be unsound growth and development. Our neighborhoods have gradually been transformed from quiet, livable communities into places with unacceptable levels of traffic and congestion. As I have been speaking with and listening to residents of the 2nd District this issue has come up repeatedly as one of their primary concerns.

For this reason I am calling for a moratorium on rezoning in the unincorporated 2nd District until we create an updated community plan, which should be done as soon as possible. Only by working together and insisting on good regional and community planning can we balance the preservation of neighborhoods, environment and open space with our housing challenges.

I look forward to discussing this important issue with 2nd District residents, and hope that the other announced and potential candidates join me in taking the same stand on this issue. Good community planning is of critical importance to ensuring that the 2nd District has neighborhoods that are diverse, safe and livable.”
-----------------------------------

Bill, since Janet was the first to call for a moratorium how is she copying Joe?

Bill,

Joe does nothing but pass grants from the feds to the county and the state to the county. He is a bueraucrat, middlemanager and he angers his colleagues with his ego and grandstanding.

Maybe they endorsed Janet Wolf because she has the most elected experience and is concerned about their issues? After all who know more about the importance of public safety than someone who lost her home in a fire?

Dear Tired Gambler,

Do you think Susan Rose liked it when Wolf came out first for a moratorium? She wanted rezones as quick as she could get them! Janet is independent and strong, not a weak panderer like other candidates!

Dear 10:25,

Joe came out first against the mandate and favored a moratorium. He has been fighting dense development since BEFORE his 2nd district campaign. In December of 2005, the Coalition for Sensible Planning met with all four candidates individually and discussed land use concerns in depth. Janet was not sure about the rezoning issue. It was clear that she was the least knowledgeable of all the candidates, but she did state that she had a desire to learn. I think she has learned a few things and is now making stronger statements. But it is not anywhere near accurate to tout her as the "first for a moratorium" -- even Secord spoke in favor of a moratorium before she did.

But that is not what matters. If the candidates make CONSISTENT and COMPATIBLE promises during their campaigns, and then KEEP that position if/when elected then we are OK. But those that say "NO rezone on Ag lands" and also say "development on MTD property is OK" have already contradicted themselves. Both Das and Janet fall into that category. What will they do about that? Will they retract one of the statements? Janet has retracted statements before. Das? I don't know. Joe hasn't had to. Dan..??

I haven't attended all the forums. Was the MTD property brought up again?

If anybody has any doubt about why some people in the City are so turned off by Das you need look no further than todays' piece about the Harbor in the NP. "He" is going to balance the budget. Not all the Departments that have been cutting employees over the past two years. Not the employees who have been working longer hours, having programs cut ( Easter Egg Hunt anyone?). Not the parents, ball teams, etc. that are paying higher Recreation fees. Not all the other members of council. Just "he". It's a collaborative process and people are tired of the grandstanding. In fact that money won't help balance a budget that is already balanced! The City announced last week that it is in the black! He is running for another office while using this one as a launching pad on a daily basis. Folks at City Hall are really in a quandary over this one: Support him and let him make the County miserable or keep him and........

Sick and Tired at City Hall

Janet came out first on the moratorium?!?

Uhh...no. Not even close. Maybe she said it first to the League of Democratic Woman Firefighters.

Boy oh boy, that Firefighter endorsement for Janet is really sticking in somebody's craw. By the way it's getting slammed someone else must have been counting on it, as George W would say, Big Time.

Can I see a show of hands for anyone who has heard of anything new from Joe the dispatcher? Only Das has the courage to state his views and he stated new views at the league debate. Maybe the LOWV should change thier tired old format to foster a free speech exchange between the candidates. What fools those mortals are.

Nothing new from the Guzz, because his position doesn't change. His message is consistent, and he does not change his tune just to suit the crowd. How refreshing.

Joe the dispatcher is a light weight who should drop out of the race. His performance at the debate was by far the worst. Das held the crowd spell bound with his depth of knowledge and exp. It is sad to see him leave the council but it is a great thing for our county and state.

449---spellbound? were we at the same debate?

you make it sound as if its a tryout for a reality series.

Anon 4:49...what exactly was Das talking about with the fire and ice thing? Sounded like he was outside smokin' it up at the break.

And if you were "spellbound" you must have had a whiff of some second hand smoke.

4/27/2006 10:48 PM

Das' fire is a smoke screen to hide his broken promise to finish his work for the city that voted for him barely two years ago. Das waited barely 17 months to begin openly campaigning for his next gig! I guess he wasn't really running for city council to fight for the NPO afterall! Whats a promise when you are Das and can invent a rationale to do anything that your feverish following will swallow.

1112pm--you're so right.

2nd District voters won't suffer such foolery. the question really will be, when Das is faced with running for his 2nd City Council seat, how will he humble [is that a word he knows about?] himself to CIty voters--who were skeptical but tolerant about him 2 years ago; and who now will likely be ready to move on.

Time for Das to pack his bags again? Ventura County anyone?

5/01/2006 7:49 AM

Das is only packing his bags to move to the board of supervisors. Das will be a great supervisor. I only hope we can keep him in the county. If Lois Capps retires he will make a great congressmember.

Fire is a metaphor for Das cutting thru the ice (secord) and ice ( old republican leadership,firestone) What is hard to understand. Das is hot and everyone knows it.

5/01/2006 12:43 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

mmm ok anon 1243 ;

and "hot" = : someone qualified and mature enough to serve as a County Supervisor? not so much, methinks, not so much

and cutting through the ice? what does that mean in relation to Secord/Firestone--- cutting through them?

wow, must be the language of some higher plane us mere mortal public servants don't yet comprehend....
