Wolf Gets County Firefighter Support

County Firefighters endorsed 2nd District Supervisorial Candidate Janet Wolf saying in a press release BlogaBarbara received that "Janet impressed our Executive Board with her extensive knowledge of the importance of disaster preparedness. As someone who lost her home in the Painted Cave Fire she will have real life experience to rely on when making land use decisions that impact public safety. Her commitment to public safety and disaster planning, combined with her deep roots in the community made her the obvious choice to our diverse membership."

Does one need the majority of endorsements to win? It sure helps...

Both Janet and Das have worked hard and both have good endorsements. It is up to the voters to decide who will better represent the views of residents of the 2nd District. I will say however that Janet is turning out to not be another Dianne Channing, as Travis Factswrong had alleged.

Its funny how the endorsments have split. Each has environmental groups, womens groups, labor and democratic officeholders. If public safety groups unite behind Janet it could give her the edge.

It's not so much the number, but the nature and depth of the endorsements that are so powerful in Wolf's case; the extensive processes and membership involved in her most significant endorsements--Fire, and Womens Political committee are notable for this race. and the unanimity behind the endorsements, too. The Fire press release also noted: "Her extensive knowledge of county and regional issues and commitment to public safety were important to our diverse board and membership in making our selection."

Janet is hitting her stride, the NewsPress and some backroom politicos attempts to marginalize her because of her gender and style are crumbling.
If people truly believe that Secord as Second District Sup would be a disaster then lets unite behind Janet and win it in June. Naysayers and people with dubious motives will say thats not possible but so what.
Let's just do it.

I agree that Janet Wolf's presentation has improved significantly since that first debate at the Goleta Community Center. This is going to continue to be an interesting race, right up til election day.

Why is it that everytime I read something about Wolf or hear her speak, her loss of her home in the Painted Cave Fire comes up? Is losing one's house in a fire a qualification? Does it help someone decide how to make policy for a county? It's certainly sad, but not a reason to vote for someone.

Are you accusing the NewsPress of sexism?

Now, who is the one with the dubious motives?

Well in terms of losing her house, it at least proves she has actually lived in the Goleta Valley for the last 16 years(at least) since the Painted Cave Fire was in 1990. She must be starting to pick up steam, here come the backbiters.

Whoever said Das has the election in the bag, do you have polling to back that up?

I think it will be close between Das and Janet for 2nd in the June primary. I haven't seen anything putting Das clearly out in front - not fundraising, not polling and not endorsements. Maybe you are right - I just want to hear what facts you have!

oh my.....what could POSSIBLY be viewed as sexist about the News Press editorial pages.....
uh....the fact that Travis saves and never ceases to fire his most vicious salvos for female officeholders??

LOL--0900 glad to see Das' team is back to the sports metaphors......what about his "full court press" for WPC...he "struck out" there too.....
in the bag? not so fast, my friend, not so fast...

Dear 9:00, Chicken Salad out of Chicken----. Das didn't press the Firefighters? Is there any doubt anymore that most of the contributers to this blog are paid political "advisors"? You are talking to each other.

947-you miss the point; Janet living---continuously--in the 2nd District since and beyond the 1991 Painted Cave fire tells voters in the unincorporated areas a lot--a lot more than Das telling his stories of surfing and being worried about losing his "favorite places".

and its just one fact about Janet---not the reason for the Fire endorsement or even reason enough to vote for her. It's just one more fact to add to her lengthy, strong and relevant resume of public service and personal attachment to the 2nd District.

Wolf got the endorsement from Womens Political Committee (WPC) because she played the game right and was a member in that group for 12 years. WPC actually did not base it on much more than that with their subjective criteria, and the endorsement committee within WPC was playing sentimental favorites instead of basing it on political power to beat Secord. That may be okay, but people should understand what really happened.

At least the WPC endorsement was not total gamesmanship and manipulation of process like the Democratic Central Committee endorsement was, with Daraka Larimore as the puppet-master.

The Das ego caught up with him this time with the WPC endorsement, but for these two candidates who most people think are equally qualified, the edge with WPC naturally went to the female candidate who has been a long-term member of the organization. But are these two candidates really equally qualified? Das supporters think not, and that is why they support Das.

It is the quality of endorsements, not the quantity. WPC is considered one of the most influential, but we shall see how close this gets on June election day and if the supporters of the loser (Williams or Wolf) can suck up their smugness and resentment and rally around the other candidate to beat Secord at any cost.

The Das Williams supporters will support Wolf if she indeed comes in second to Secord, but will the current Wolf supporters turn around and back Williams if he is the one to take on Secord? Who will be driven by ego and personality then?

Politics is to want something. We know what Das wants. But will supporters of Janet Wolf want it as well if they do not get second place in the June primary?

Being unfortunate to have one's home burned down in a wildfire somehow is supposed to make one more skilled to be a leader in disaster preparedness?!?!

If that were the basis for an endorsement, then The Guzz obviously would be the best candidate because he obviously is the expert in disaster preparedness having worked in this for so many years.

Obviously, County Firefighters association is not going to endorse The Guzz, and they hold a grudge against Williams. Wolf has been playing up support of the county firefighters almost to the point of pandering. That is okay, and her reasons are fine about the cost of housing and the need for firefighter equipment etc., as politics is politics.

But when endorsements become so shallow and based more on who they are endorsing against instead of why endorsing for, then all these endorsements become more of a game and charade.

FDS @ 2pm: perhaps now is the time to be realistic about Das' inability to get people to 'unite behind him' instead of promoting what seems to be the current spin about "lets all support whoever wins" against Secord;

people should be realistic about the fact Das' antics have alienated so many people for so long that he would not have such solid support in the fall...but Janet would. Das is the one who interjected himself into this race after making the statement in the N-P, "if no one else will provide that leadership, I will step forward.". If that wasn't a slap at Wolf and the Dem leaders he's now hoping to court if he wins in June, what was it? So please, spare us the attempts at promoting 'unity' now that Wolf is gaining ground. Begin to realize that there are reasons---good ones and incontrovertible ones---that more people would unite around Janet than they would around Das in the fall. and no one is more responsible for that fact than Das himself.

Gee Valerio, kinda bitter aren't you? What grudge does County Fire carry against Das? Please enlghten us. Or are you just spinning Chicken---- into Chicken salad?

Janet is getting better. She has a heavy burden - Susan Rose. It will cost her the election.

Dear Valerio,

What do you have to back up that claim? Doesn't an 11 year track record in elected office, experience with contract and labor negotiations, and overseeing a multi-million dollar budget mean anything? Oh, of course not. Its because of pandering. The woman has a life experience that impacts the way she looks at the issue. Is it any different than Das seeing all the places he liked to go surfing getting developed having an impact on how he views the environment?

Grow up - she is a very qualified candidate - that is why she got the endorsement!

Valerio also somehow denigrates the significance of the County Firefighters endorsement of Wolf, while ignoring the truly ridiculous and embarassingly insular cadre of labor and "democratic party" endorsements (UAW anyone? Das' campaign manager on the 2nd Dist DSC seat??) orchestrated by Team Das, et al.

Hmm I wonder which endorsements will be more significant to 2nd District voters.

and please, Valerio, it is beneath you to level the insults you did in your first paragraph and distorting and taking out of context part of the Fire endorsement statement. Good spin but patently untrue.

"politics is to want something"? Oh please keep the rhetoric in your TA office at UCSB. It just doesn't sound the same out here. Bring a bullhorn next time, it might work.

The day after the election will find the firefighters trying to figuare out how to make up to Das. What a mistake they made. Maybe they should stick to fighting fires and stay out of politics. Das has something better than their endorsment, the power of ideas!

Wrong. They pay attention to ideas. Janet and Joe are tired and old. They ideas are few and far between. Only Das has the exp. to lead. The firefighters will come crawling on their hands and knees to Das after the primary. Begging him to forgive them.

8:24: oh no! is Das and team reneging on their "clean campaign promise" by such unabashed namecalling??......crawling firefighters begging...?? now THERE's an image that will surely appeal to 2nd District voters....
