Das Williams On Fire?

Today's candidate installment simply points to the crazy, up and down nature of this race and how the second spot in a run off is very likely up for grabs. Does Das have the "x" factor that will get him there or will Janet's endorsements be the deciding factor?

Sara--not that you're showing your bias, subtle as it may be, but its not simply "Janet's endorsements" that will get her there, but Janet's 11 year record of public service--complete with "backbone", "standing up" to bad policies, and much more.

The recklessness embedded in the life, contradictions and outright deceptions of the candidate Williams, profiled in today's News-Press does not comport with being a strong contender in a two-person race with a veteran officeholder.

Devastating article on Das today. Add that to the commercial and the "I was born here" quote from the Kenai Kid and you have one faux Latino in big trouble.

I haven't decided who I would vote for in this race -- did not mean to say that endorsements are the only game Janet's got. But, it sure does help...

My opinion of who is going to do well in the election has nothing to do with my eventual vote, but I think that Guzzardi will do much better than most people think.

Someone said last week that he needs to be more than a single-issue candidate, but I think his clear no-growth message will get him a lot of votes when people mark the ballot. People talk about what effects certain candidates will have if elected, but everyone who's been paying attention knows what they will get with Guzzardi. I think there are enough people fed up with development problems and attitudes here that they will make their decision on that single issue.

It's kind of like George Bush. Lots of people don't agree with what he stands for, but they respect the fact that his stance is clear. I'm a lifelong Democrat and I can't tell you what the Dems would do if they actually won Congress this fall. With Guzzardi, you know what he'll do if he's elected

I haven't decided yet who I'll vote for.

As far as I am concerned, having seen her up close in situations in which she disagreed, I am for anyone but Janet Wolf. She’s close-minded.

I don't think that the Second District needs another multimillionaire, if maybe only from the foothills residence, with a awyer husband (doesn't that sound familiar?), to represent the 2nd district and the pressures that are hare and coming for development. Density won't bother her since she's above it all.

As for her being an environmentalist, I don't understand how the Sierra Club can endorse both Wolf and Williams. What has Janet Wolf stood up for in terms of environmental protection? (Except now, of course, when she is running.)

Janet the Candidate is nothing more than Susan Rose's creation. Her "qualifications" stem from the simple fact that she is friends with the local electeds. This is what got her on the ballot. This is what got her the endorsements. This is what may get her elected....if the voters fall for the same old political games that brought us our current regime.

She implemented the first recycling program of any school district in the county and initiated discussion that led to reduction of pesticides used near our children. How could she have done more to protect our environment on the school board?

Shame on you anon-4:11 for falsely accusing someone of sexism. Your shameless quick draw on the sexist card is thinly veiled. Your trying to use the sexism card to discredit someone's valid point that someone who started a recycling program is not that big of a deal.

Simmer down 4:11. Where does the issue of sexism come in here?! The clear point I am making is that starting a recycling program in a small school district does not translate to the ability to manage a $700 million county budget. Holy cow...get real...try to stay on point...and stop trying to move the discussion to gender or some other unrelated issue.

This excerpt was on Das' blog. Please note the webmaster insert.

"Earlier this year, he accepted an award for being one of the 50 most influential Latinos on the Central Coast, but admits he is not Latino [webmaster note: they insisted on including Das as a symbol to young Latinos of what an inner-city kid can do to improve his community]. He is European-American and Indonesian -- and 1/16th American Indian, he said"

Now just exactly what inner city was it that Das grew up in? I would hardly call Kehoe, Alaska the "inner city". And Isla Vista definitely doesn't fit the description...maybe he was referring to Carpinteria? Or Sacramento?

11:05 Anonymous: Williams said in his ad,"I grew up here." He did not say he was born here. He has said consistently, without disagreement, that he grew up in Isla Vista. That, so far as I know, is the Second District, which is where he also lives now in his condo. (All of this is public record.)

If one quotes, as you did, one should quote accurately.

However, I think it is a dumb ad --- the opening shots look as though he is talking to a statue. Surely, his ad team could have done better!

Pay no attention to 4:11pm. Your point is good. I agree that Janet's experience is not strong enough for the 2nd district seat.

I reflect on that often, because being in a race like this is tough, especially with so many people that think that being anonymous entitles them to be really nasty. When we saw the results of our poll back in Dec, it looked like Dan would have broken 50% without me in the race.

I have always said "I grew up here." I definately did not grow up in Kenai. i was less than 1 years old when I was back here in the Tri-Counties (ojai to be exact). I moved to IV in 4th grade and Goleta in 7th. Is that precise enough for you? The fact is, we had such a fractured family that I never lived in the same house for more than 2 years, but this place has always been my home.

To set the record straight on the race issue, I informed the Latino Today newspaper that I was not Latino by blood, but they decided to give the award to me because of my service to the Latino community. I am part Native American, Indonesian, Dutch, yankee caucasian, and maybe African (unknown side of the family), but in Isla Vista and Goleta, where I grew up, i was adopted by the Latinos as part of the gente. I am honored by that, and the award and Barney knows all this, but, more drama presenting it like a smoking gun, right?

6:25,

You might want to check where you are registered to vote. Isla Vista hasn't been in the 2nd district since...........Never! His condo is in the City of Santa Barbara because he is an elected official in that City, you know, he has to live there...........to be elected there.

Uniting people wherever he goes and he goes where he is needed.

Good God.....

No, Das; anonymous just entitles people to not have to be in the sights of your vicious "machine" when we try to tell the truth. and what does "adopted by the gente" mean....what does "yankee caucasian" mean?
forget it. who cares. I have been in the rooms when you have allowed to go unchallenged a belief that you are Latino---why would you do that? other than to exploit the Latino vote.

Okay, sorry to not know the boundaries of the second/third districts. I live, have always lived in the 1st District. Clearly, I should have stuck with just the quote clarification!

Interesting piece on Janet Wolf today. Which is worse, to be a puppet of campaign workers and Susan Rose or to be brazenly ambitious? The Dr. Dan must be salivating: each of the three Dems were quite savaged while he emerged unscathed. Should be an interesting race.

Dear Das,

The fact is you accepted an award for being something that you are not. The award could have been given to a DESERVING LATINO, but instead is exploited by your campaign in order to get votes.

This is proof positive that Das will not just say or do anything to get elected - he'll try and PRETEND TO BE ANONE OR ANYTHING in order to get elected.

I hate name-calling, it's shades of childhood cruelties at elementary schools, and I appreciate this blog and am glad there's no more factswrong, etc.

There may be nasty comments, but, again, childhood, sticks and stones....etc and being attacked goes as much with the electoral territory as being praised.

Imo, the US press, including the local, is way too gentle on politicians, way too willing to take what's said as fact. Take a look sometime at the Eng. parliament on C-Span, read some of the UK newspapers!

Psuedonyms, anonymity, and a scrapping politics have a glorious history. Without that, we'd be even more at the mercy of deluges of ads from whoever has the most money. It's bad enough now and unless Buckley v Valeo is overturned, I don't think there'll ever be a level playing field with genuine campaign finance reform.

Hurrah for blogdom and this particular blog, unusual in that it really is more the voice of the people (as many as want) than the owner. And good for Das (and Joe Guzzardi also, I think, has posted) for being willing to wade into the fray under his own name.

Excuse me, I object to the comment that atributes blame to my candidate "for once again using a local campaign to pit progressives against one another..." because janet was the come-lately. She may have been courted for a long while by Ms. Rose, but she did not agree to be a candidate until well after Das Williams made the rounds for early support.

Secondly, I'm sorry to be late in commenting, because I missed Mr. Pinto's deleted remarks. But I want to say I would rather see blatant racism-- why not? That's the "beauty" of free speech, that we know who is ugly in their words and opinions. At least he wrote his name.

OTOH, Ms. Sara did not delete Anonymouses' shallow comments about the award to Das from a Latino organization. Anon 10:09 simply dismisses why the award was given --the organization gives for its own reasons such as leadership in the Latino community, not Anon's, who thinks awards are given for "being" Latino. THAT is unaware-self righteous racism, in my humble opinion. The rest of Anon's comments are similarly dismissive of Latino voters as if they are sheep.

I disagree with Salud (for not backing Das) and Anon's stances. But I'll defend to the end your right to say it.

I suppose the answer is that he has to give SOME reason for leaving his city council term early that isn't about his own ambition?

The latest polling shows that Janet has passed Das and that she beats Dan Secord in a heads up election. Sadly, Das loses to Secord in a heads up. Since Janet has public safety, some republicans will defect to Janet making it tougher for him to win.

The real question is whether or not Das will toss aside his "Clean Campaign" pledge and elbow Janet out of the way.

Dan HOPES that he can challenge Das in November rather than Janet.

Dan should take a leaf out of Gray Davis' campaign book (pre-Arnold). Remember what Davis did to Richard Reardon so that Davis could face more extreme Bill Simon in the general rather than more moderate Reardon?

Dan should do whatever he can to make sure Das beats Janet in the prelim, since Dan will lose to Janet but would beat Das.

Sadly you are wrong. Only Das can beat Secord. I mean why vote for a fake Secord like Janet when you can vote for the real Secord. Das will create a campaign of extreme contrasts for the voters. Das has the vision to lead us forward. Janet is like the whatever candidate. Joe, should just drop out.

Why run against a democrat supported by a broad coalition of democrats, public safety unions and enviros when you can run against a child who is endorsed by a bunch of 3rd District activists that are still stuck in the 60's and democratic clubs that didn't even exist until two months ago?

Supports of Williams will turn around and support Wolf in the unlikely event she makes the cut and challenges Secord in the November election. But will current supporters of Wolf wake up and support Williams on June 7, or will they be typical losing Democrats and prefer to be mad rather than win against Secord?

Valerio---you are talking apples and oranges;Das entered the race knowing that Capps and many others had already endorsed Janet. He thinks he can "do some things better"and has criticized what he calls the "establishment" Democrats at every step. He has also alientated, insulted, worked directly against or misrepresented himself to many individuals who I am sure would NOT ever choose to endorse him, in this or any other race. So he made the decision to essentially run against Janet---pure and simple, no matter how he spins it or will try to 'make nice' after she wins. He and the machine that propelled him, deluded him really into thinking he could possibly beat secord, are all bitter for one reason or another at Susan, Naomi, Salud whoever they feel like blaming [kind of like travis, huh but that's for another psychoanalyst to figure out]; so why would Das possibly EVER want their support. He [or his minions] are also trashing the Fire endorsement and all public safety so I'm sure he has no interest in those endorsements either. Ever. WHy do people continue to make excuses for his bad behavior, to shield him from the natural consequences of his actions? at what cost, too. and then have the nerve to wonder if all those he has trashed will scurry to his side at some future date. That is why Secord wants Das in the race after June. what opponent wouldn't? Do the math, as they say, and ask yourself if you care more about
a) the future of Santa Barbara County or
b) the future of Das Williams political career before casting the vote June 6.
Oh that's right, so many of the Das supporters aren't in the Second District so it really doesn't matter eh?

Das this, Janet that...campaign strategy...blah blah blah...meanwhile Joe Guzzardi is the best person for the job. He is consistent in his stance against big development in this small coastal strip. The guy is smart and honest and doesn't just prattle off what others want to hear. He has more relevant experience than the others, and will work well with the North County sups.

Question for you Das fanatics:
What do you make of Das saying "don't rezone ag" and then turning around and saying he would favor development on the MTD property? Although it is not being farmed now, it could be, and/or it could serve as an open space or park for the surrounding development. This is my main beef with Das, because it reveals the kind of double talk we would have to put up with in the future under him.

Question for you Janet fanatics:
What on earth are you thinking with this candidate? I do not see in her a desire to represent the 2nd district -- I see someone who will follow an privately funded agenda and then try to say it's good for the people. We've had enough of that.

Guzzardi is the right person for the job. We are fortunate to have someone like him running, so I hope voters will recognize that and put in him office.

The Das was in The Dish today, attacking the two democratic supervisors.

"Susan and Salud aren't standing up to these guys."(The Board Majority)

Funny, I thought on issues such as Naples, the Oak Tree Ordinance, the Central Coast BAR, removal of Comp Planning from P&D and a whole bunch of other issues that they did stand up. Susan Rose fought hard to stop the Board from approving development at More Mesa.

So why is Das attacking democrats again, saying things that aren't true?
