Woo-ing Voters in the 2nd
I'm not entirely clear why Guzzardi would want to endorse Secord given his record on development and The Guzz's very public slow growth stands. Upset over who spent money where aside -- I don't see Guzzardi having a choice if he is going to endorse at all. Do Secord and Wolf really want his support? Probably so....

Isn't it time for Joe to take his morality play down the road? He would have won if he had Capp's extra $17,000? The voters have now spoken 4 times. There is just something off-putting about the self canonization of just plain Joe.
Joe is wise sit back and let the candidates express their vision to him. Based on that, his support of a specific candidate or withholding endorsement, can/will have a huge impact on the race - IMHO, his supporters are a critical piece of choosing the next supervisor. Dan or Janet need Joe's supporters to assure not only a clear cut victory but also the mandate for future growth and development here for the next decade.
I really believe Joe wants what is best for Santa Barbara.......it will be interesting to see how this pans out. dd
perhaps Guzzardi and his supporters should spend some time perusing Secord's endorsement list.. http://www.dansecord.com/endorse/ and then do some homework on the aggressively pro-development and staunchly conservative records of some of those endorsers [Stoker, Graffy, Firestone, Maldonado]. Then use common sense to anticipate why these folks are so anxious to get Secord on board on a South Coast Supervisorial seat.
In other words: do the math, kids!
Dan plus dollars plus property rights EQUALS mcmansions;
mcmansions impacts EQUAL less impact than high-density ghettos;
therefore Dan EQUALS less impact on environment...
Janet EQUALS minimal experience plus Rose;
(Dems divided by infighting) plus (Capps times laundered cash) is GREATER THAN minimal experience plus Rose;
therefore Janet EQUALS squeaked in with help;
squeaking in with help EQUALS owes favors;
therefore Janet EQUALS payback plus interest;
payback goes to cronies and backers, ie, affordable housing advocates;
affordable housing advocates EQUALS development industry incognito;
therefore Janet EQUALS density and all the impacts that come with it...
this lifelong democrat feels forced to vote for Dan...!!!
...and Guzzardi owes support to no one, and there is no reason for him to cave in. Stay real, Joe!!!
the reason Guzz ran and the reason we all, esp Gary Earl, have been working so hard is Susan Rose.
Susan Rose handpicked Janet Wolf.
To those of us in noleta - Wolf is Rose.
Why would we support Wolf? Why would Guzz support Wolf?
Wolf represents everything we do not.
Wolf is a Rose clone.
Wolf is like Rose in the contributions she takes.
At least Rose took the money from Towbes, Bermant and other Goleta developers directly - Wolf took laundered money from Salud and Lois.
Rose and Wolf support high density affordable homes for social reasons. We opposed high density for all reasons.
Secord gets it.
Hey "logic in the 2nd"
Wasn't Firestone the one who saved Goleta from all the density?
Who do you trust more Firestone or Rose?
I go with Firestone.
I do not always agree with him - yet he is honest and listens. He defeated the Wolf-Rose plan for high density in Goleta.
"Stoker, Graffy, Firestone, Maldonado" "aggressively pro-development and stauchly conservative"????? They may be pro-growth, but by any standard they are NOT stauch conservatives. Moderates, maybe, but that's all. No need for hysterics.
If Joe wanted Janet he would not have run.
It is clear that Gary Earle and Travis, both big Joe supporters are like me - we like Joe. Das was immature and Janet was Rose all over again. Just like Rose she had Naomi and Lois - the whole socail crowd.
As one solid Joe supporter I am voting for Dr. Dan. i have met him. While he is not Joe. I trust him and what he says. His record at the city is not a record of high density social engineering. He supported reuse and things like the new Ritzz where there is paving and buildings today - who cares.
When he says we have been ignored like a orphan - I believe him. WIth Wolf I have not believed a thing she has stated about what we want. She is a clone of Rose in what she says and how she says it.
Joe - you and Dr. Dan a great team.
Secord = never saw a project he didnt like.
Secord = voted to develop Goleta Valley open space on the Coastal Commission.
Why would we in Noleta want to vote for someone who HAS ALREADY IGNORED US? We at More Mesa petitioned the Coastal Comm. to vote for the neighbors and against More Mesa McMansions. Dan voted against our appeal. Then the project came back to him for a yes/no vote and he didnt listen to us again!
Janet Wolf will listen to us. She will protect our neighborhoods better than Dan. Dan has done nothing to prove he has changed from his pro-developer, pro Barry Berkus, pro-property rights at any price ways.
Firestone is no friend of Noleta. In fact he is no friend of anyone who cares about neihgborhoods and the environment. Firestone is the one leading the charge to develop open space all over the south coast. Firestone is the one who argues with neighbors and puts them down when they try to comment and protect neighborhoods. Firestone is in the pocket of all the big landowners and developers
"'Stoker, Graffy, Firestone, Maldonado" "aggressively pro-development and stauchly conservative'????? They may be pro-growth, but by any standard they are NOT stauch conservatives. Moderates, maybe, but that's all. No need for hysterics."
Maybe you can name 4 or more contemporary local candidates who actually are further to the right than those radcons, in order to back up your apologetic.
Ha ha, I doubt it.
5:49pm anon- you believe Developer Dan wont develop our open space and neighborhoods? Please! This is the guy that asks how high everytime a developer tells him to jump!
Isn't Dan the same guy that is supported by local developers that have built out most of the 2nd District? Isnt this the same Developer Dan that took over $10,000 from pro-housing groups like realtors and developers. Does anyone wonder why the Realtors PAC gave him $7000? It wasnt because he is against building more housing for them to sell, I can tell you that!
Seems to be a lot of opinion and no facts.
The fact is the person who took developer money in this race is Wolf. Sadly her developer money was well cleaned and filtered by her friends Salud and Lois. Look at Salud's money - Bermant, Towbes, all sorts of development types - consultants - you name it. Same for Lois. Lots of develpment money.
Secord took little to no developer money.
Quite frankly, that is the odd thing - Janet still fits the high density housing mold of Rose and took money from the high density developers like Towbes and Bermant all laundrered.
And what open space did secord vote develop on the coastal commission- maxwell - give me a break - salud - rose and everyone supported that.
The problem is that there are legal rights to property and today the county faces a $10 million judgement for taking property rights. Promoting the high density Rose-Wolf growth is one thing we all oppose - allowing a fair use of land so we avoid costly legal judgemens is another.
Secord votes in a consistent legal manner, no friend to developers only a friend to all property owners - those who already have land and do not want to see the Rose Wolf high density and those who have land and a right to do something -
Mark my word Janet Wolf is Rose with a new package.
if this entire election is about developement you must define what you do not want.
there is no candidate against all development.
there is one candidate that favors liberial social engineering development of high density shoved down the throats of others - if you want that 20 per acre homes on farm land - vote for Wolf.
there is one candidate who will respect all of our property rights and vote for fair, environmentally sensitive development - if you respect property rights - vote for Secord.
so how about other issues?
our county is doing great thanks to a windfall of taxes to the state this year. Yet we face huge pension funds looming over us and only one candidate cares or is willing to discuss how are streets will be fixed and if we will even have enough money to keep all the fire stations open. if you care about the county budget vote for Secord.
if you love the traffic mess brought on by Wolf's sponsor, Mrs. Rose. then vote for Wolf - she will bring more of the same - more traffic - more intersections impacted.
if you want traffic solutions - if you want traffic fixed see the box that says Secord and check it.
it is not all black and white.
Joe Guzzardi is no doubt mindful of the complete loss of credibility he would experience if he threw his support to Secord. Any but the most partisan of locals has to concede that Secord has consistently been the most pro-development, pro-builder local elected official on the South Coast for over a decade. So, what credibility Joe might have gained over the recent primary election would pretty much be eroded and he would just be another would-be politico trying to curry favor with the moneyed elite....
Joe Guzzardi would take ten steps back if he endorsed Wolf.
Endorsing Wolf would be like endorsing Rose for re-election.
Joe does not support Rose. Joe does not support Lois and all her polictical laundering games as someone outlined above.
If Joe could support Wolf it would be stating everything he said was B.S.
All the Guzzardi supporters I know support Secord or no one - not one - not one single one supports Wolf because Rose is the reason we formed and we are fighting for our rights.
12:39 PM
GIve me a break. You are so overplaying your cards. If Secord is so pro-growth why are the only developer contributions going to Wolf via Salud and Lois?
So...in conclusion. Wolf is gullible enough to think we should put in high-density housing, yet she doesn't like traffic. Secord's gonna put a roundabout at every intersection in the 2nd district.
Can I still vote for Guzzardi?
Hello 4:21 PM "Can I still vote for Guzzardi?"
Yes - vote for Secord.
If you want Rose - vote for Wolf
LOLOLOLOLOLOL...
so, 2nd Dist Truth---- are you new here or something? Realtors don't want housing? hey, is this Lewis Carrol reports or whaaatttt?????
Sara---this blog is worth it just to see the Secord revisionist history being spun........
La Entrada?
Veronica Meadows?
More Mesa?
1620 Garden St
Yano condos?
St Francis tear down
Massive expansion of Samarkand over neighbors objections?
dense housing at carrillo and castillo?
Dan likes development alright.
Developers John and Hazel Blakenship have given thousands of dollard to Dan over the years. Dan in turn has voted for almost every project they have proposed. Pay for play anyone?
I, too, agree, "Enough spin, what is the proof of developer dan? What projects, what contributions? I haven't seen squat."
If it's so, it would be very interesting to hear why Bendy White of the SB Planning Commission, notable for years for NOT being partial to developers, for standing up for good planning, is supporting Secord (along with most of the other city planning commissioners.)
Rather than flinging epithets, how about giving some facts to back up the d.d. slur?
The Secord posters of this thread want you to believe that Wolf is the end of the world because of support by Cops, Firefighters, Capps and Rose. Okay.

Yea, I can see how Wolf is so compromised by the company she keeps as opposed to Dan.
Wake up folks! Put aside the bickering and quit re-running June's election. They are counting on you being angry, lazy or stupid. Look at that list and think how much of your future you want to turn over to them.
above at 4:21 it was stated ". . . . So...in conclusion. Wolf is gullible enough to . . . " No matter what follows the to . . the answer is - yes
I'm not keen on Secord, but as for anonymous 8:44pm, your shots at Secord by listing supporters once removed do nothing to tell me that Janet would be any better. It's a sorry state of affairs if we are practicing "anyone but Bush" voting tactics in our local election.
I will not vote for Janet out of fear of Secord. And I don't believe Janet is the end of the world because of her endorsements. I believe that Janet has already shown that she is willing to be in alliance with the pro-growth machine in order to get money for campaign marketing and therefore gain votes from people who don't have time to do more research on the job applicants. REPRESENTATION OF THE RESIDENTS <-----that's the job she's applied for. So far she's represented Rose and Capps.
Come on, Janet. We need a representative. If you aren't willing to do the job and run on your own merits, then PLEASE step down.
Kelly,
Actually those are not supporters "once removed" but rather for this election. Check the reports yourself.
And just how has she "represented Rose and Capps". If this is your logic than Secord "represents" developers.
And please prove how she is in "alliance" with the "pro-growth machine" while you are at it.
Why don't you get over your anger and do something besides distort and accuse?
Looking at the Secord record it frightens me to think of what he could do to our Valley in a short period of time if elected. Those condos coming in at Modoc and Hollister look A LOT like the developments that Secord approved on the City Council. For eample those HUGE CONDOS you can see from the freeway going South towards the Milpas exit. We don't need massive market rate development in the Goleta Valley. WE don't need Dan Secord!
The condos at Hollister and Modoc were approved by Susan Rose, Wolf's mentor!
Why don't you get over your anger and do something besides distort and accuse?
You're the one who sounds angry. She's in alliance with pro-growth machine because she believes that we need more housing. Either she's gullible enough to actually believe that or conniving enough to contribute to the distortion that's been going on to do whatever it takes to encourage highly-profitable development. When asked about the MTD property, Wolf said yes to development and Secord said no.
And I don't want to hear about More Mesa. More Mesa is not going to get developed, whether Wolf does anything or not. It's an empty promise. What else does she promise to protect, Greenland?
I want to know how each candidate feels specifically about certain land parcels, Tatum, San Marcos Farms, MTD. I know how Guzzardi feels, that's why I voted for him. And if I don't get a good answer from either candidate, I still might vote for Guzzardi.
Mike Pinto says...
Both Janet and Secord are controlled by the corporate power brokers. It doesnt matter which strings are pulled, they will mimic each other. Only Das would have stood with the people. After attending the Rainbow gathering I am more convinced than ever that the progressive movement in our community is the deciding voice in this election.
If I knew Dan Secord would have ever voted for Ralph's, I would have marched in the streets. My god what happens if he apporves a Vons? Our county could be ruined.
Response to 9:22am--
1. By "once removed", I mean that they are supposed clients of a supporter, rather than on the supporter list. My point is that this does not make Janet look any better than Secord.
2. So far, to me, she has represented Rose by advocating for the same development agenda even though residents have been trying hard to keep Noleta protected. We need parks, we want to keep and increase agriculture; we definitely do not want to have more density. There are solutions to help with the affordability issues that do not involve high-density growth.
3. It seems to me that Janet mentions concerns for the "housing balance" as frequently as she mentions her concerns for "neighborhoods." From listening to Susan Rose's rhetoric in recent years, I've had experience with how this translates. Susan Rose is definitely in favor of more density in Noleta, and Wolf's talk sounds a lot like Rose's. I'd be happy to hear her clearly say different.
I've been listening for 7 months and perusing her website, and reading her brochures, and I have yet to hear her commit to anything specific except for housing solutions, More Mesa and Gaviota. More Mesa and Gaviota are noble causes. And yet, the latest mantra to save these spaces has been "transfer of development rights" -- and Noleta is targeted. Yet Noleta is the area that's only level of representation is the 2nd district supervisor. We need a representative that values the open spaces and the quality of life in our neighborhoods. I'll vote for Janet if/when she gives me something to vote for.
4. Anger? Ah, you threw the "A" word at me. Will I bite? No thanks.
5. As for your invitation to "do something besides distort and accuse". I already do a lot to stay in touch on these issues and serve my community as a volunteer. Ignorance may be bliss, but knowledge is power. If you think I am distorting something, be specific. I'm happy to have a dialogue and straighten out any misperception.
SO 5:53 LET US LOOK AT THE DAN LIST OF DEVELOPMENT (THE SAME LIST OF ALL OF JANET'S SUPPORTERS ON THE CITY COUNCIL):
La Entrada? - Dan voted yes along with the entire city council - a 92 room hotel for 50 room condo hotel on what is asphalt now - hummn
Veronica Meadows? - Dan was not on the council - get the facts right of back off
More Mesa? - not a city issue - so he never voted - and there is no proposal for it
1620 Garden St - yes - infil in the middle of town and with the large majority of the council included all of Janet's friends
Yano condos? - AGAIN WITH ALL OF JANET'S SUPPORTERS ON THE COUNCIL
St Francis tear down - NO VOTE TO DATE? - YET DID VOTE NOT TO REZONE AGAIN WITH ALL OF JANET'S SUPPORTERS ON THE COUNCIL
Massive expansion of Samarkand over neighbors objections? - REALLY MASSIVE - SAME NUMBER OF ROOMS - AGAIN WITH ALL OF JANET'S SUPPORTERS ON THE COUNCIL
dense housing at carrillo and castillo? - OH THE AWARD WINNING AFFORDABLE HOUSING THAT EVERYONE INCLUDING MRS. CAPPS POINTS TO - VOTED AGAIN WITH ALL OF JANET'S SUPPORTERS ON THE COUNCIL
Dan likes development alright. - SECORD HAS VOTED WITH JANETS FRIENDS ON THE COUNCIL - IYA/BARNWELL AND DAS'S FRIENDS MARTY/HELENE - HE RESPECTS PROPERTY RIGHTS AND REFUSES TO PUT THE CITY AT RISK FOR LAWSUITS
YOU GOT TO HAVE SOMETHING MORE THAN THIS LIST - - - IT IS PATHETIC TO MAKE THE ARGUMENT - - - SECORD MUST HAVE DONE MORE THAN THIS?
THE BETTER ARGUMENT IS BERMANT - CAPPS - ROSE - ROMO CONNECTION. THE BIGGEST AND MOST ACTIVE GOLETA DEVELOPER - JEFF BERMANT IS TIED INTO BEN ROMO, LOIS FORMER CONSULTANT - BERMANT GIVES BIG BUCKS TO LOIS AND SALUS AND THAT MONEY WORKS ITS WAY TO WOLF - NOT THAT IS SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT.
Pinto -
Agree that both Janet and Secord are controlled by some interest. The question is who controls them and who do you trust. I for one do not trust Lois Capps at all with local issues. And I do not trust Iya. Both Capps and Iya are sell outs. And last I do not trust Rose at all.
I totally disagree with Firestone, yet I trust him. He says what he believes. And quite frankly has helped noleta more than Rose or Salud.
Secord is honest and straight forward. I will either not vote or vote for him. At least I know what I am getting - with Wolf I could not hold my nose tight enough to vote without losing my lunch.
Ralphs? Vons? Oh, the HORROR! We don't need food or agriculture. What we need are some high-density condos near some strip malls with take-out chinese and check-cashing stores. Clashing colorful lighted signs would be good, too. I especially like the flourescent liquor store near Hollister and Modoc. That's where the new tenants in the $1,575,000 condos can purchase some numb juice to drown out the sound of the trains. But first they must be careful crossing the U-Haul parking lot.
This is life in paradise!
I love Los Angles -
Yeah wow Secord supported some hotel rooms where hotels are and Rose(Wolf) supported wall to wall affordable condos.
I think throw the developer mud at Secord, leaves more on the hands of the Rose - Capps - Salud camp.
Wolf should back off the developer arguments as it is backfiring.
pretty clear choice in this election.
Dan - Long record of voting for any project proposed before him, regardless of density or neighborhood concerns.
Wolf - Long record of listening to residents and representing their interests. Has not voted for high density development.
Janet Wolf has never advocated for developing the MTD property. She says that the community should decide whether or not to rezone it for housing. She has simply stated that she is open to it, if that is what the residents want.
Why don't Dan's supporters talk about some developments he was AGAINST and WHY???
Me thinks the reason Dan Secord is trying to make Janet look like a developer is because his campaign is desperate. He was the only republican and he finished only 31 votes ahead of Janet Wolf. He is a weak candidate and only can resort to negative attacks. He has no record to brag about!
Mike Pinto says...
Wolf is the bigger sell out because she masks her intentions. Secord lets you know he is controlled by the hidden corporate power brokers in our county. So on one hand Secord says " trust me because I will tell you I stand against everything you stand for." On the other Wolf says " trust me because I will support the workers...( but only when people are watching or i might get my puppet masters angry at me)" A Faustian pact indeed for voters.
