Rude Shirts at the Thunderdome

UCSBs Atheltic Director wrote an open letter of apology in the Daily Nexus regarding some t-shirt language with racial overtones that showed up during this weekend's game against arch rival Long Beach. He didn't provide much information in the letter -- did the Gaucho Locos go too far in their top ten list? or was it another fan group? What was on the list?

Here's an idea for UCSB students who like sports and want to make a worthwhile shirt:

REINSTATE JOHN ZANT

Here's what was on the shirts per the Gaucho loco message board:

TOP 10 REASONS WHY OUR BEACH IS BETTER THAN LONG BEACH:

10. LONG BEACH: START WALKING TOWARD THE BEACH AND ED UP ON A NAVAL RESERVE.
9. FLY-OVERS ARE BETTER THAN DRIVE-BYS.
8. UCSB: SPEND 4 YEARS RELAXING ON A SANDY BEACH. CSULB: SPEND 4 YEARS IN TRAFFIC TRYING TO FIND EVEN A DIRT BEACH.
7. WE HAVE CAMPUS POINT. THEY HAVE DUI CHECKPOINT.
6. NATURAL LIGHT CANS ARE RECYCLABLE, SYRINGES AREN'T.
5. SORRY LONG BEACH, BUT ROCK, PAPER, PISTOLS IS NOT A CHILDHOOD GAME.
4. CHICKS IN BIKINI TOPS IS FAR BETTER VIEWING THAN CARGO SHIPS WITH BOXES ON TOP.
3. WHEN SOMEONE SAYS "405" UCSB THINKS FREEWAY. CSULB THINKS SAT SCORE.
2. TAKING SHOTS IS A LOT BETTER THAN GETTING SHOT.
1. CSULB: STUDENT SECTION? UCSB: BEST, LOUDEST, ROWDIEST, STUDENT SECTION ON THE WEST COAST, WHICH MAKES THE THUNDERDOME SUCH A SPECIAL PLACE TO CALL HOME TO THE LOCOS.

Am I missing the Racism?

Uhh, what's racist about that, if those in fact are the top 10 reasons?

Sounds to me as though Mr. Cunningham is a little too P.C. and I don't mean the computer.

Two lessons to learn from this post and the comments herein -- 1) BlogaBarbara isn't all about the News-Press whether or not commenters try to make it so and whether or not they make a good point (which it was). 2) Sometimes people just want to incite conversation and heated debate -- give me a break. 9:07 AM may be more right than I originally thought this morning...

I am impressed to see the Cunningham apology and hope others involved realize that this was in poor taste. I hope that those offended can forgive and that everyone learns that civility is always a better choice.

It doesn't sound racist to me, just nasty & juvenile. I'd appreciate a thoughtful, non-sarcastic explanation of what others perceive to be racist on that list.

I don't find anything on the list racist. In poor taste? Sports rivalry is as old as the hills and is all about put downs. I think it's a case of PC run amuck to publish an apology for it.
The students left off the best LB slam. Back in the day we used to refer to it as
"Wrong Beach where the Debris meets the Sea"

The average left-leaning issue spotter will of course detect racism in the references to drive-bys, pistols, low SATs and getting shot. Of course, the joke (which they themselves don't ever seem to get) is that it's their own racism bleeding through: when they're willing to make the inferential jump that drive-bys, pistols, low SATs and getting shot can only be referring to blacks or latinos.
