Community Post: Many Thanks to the Firefighters

This from one of our readers, Dirk Brandts:

===========================
I am tremendously impressed and thankful for the firefighters who are
protecting us from the Zaca Fire. By the same token, the manner in
which disaster preparedness personnel are keeping us informed and
properly alert is fantastic.

Today I watched several crews familiarize themselves with the twists
and turns of various neighborhoods in the Goleta foothills, meeting
people, learning the lay of the land and identifying sources of water.
That kind of precautionary anticipation is the essence of
professionalism. God forbid that conditions drive the fire in our
direction and necessitate a fight for our homes, but when the threat
is finally over we mustn't forget what a terrific job these
hard-working men and women have done.

Yes yes yes. The firefighters have been simply amazing. This fire has been so difficult to fight but with their efforts & the kindness of mother nature our communities may have been spared.

Sara, thanks for putting up this subject. Sadly there is only one comment. I have been quite suprised at the lack of discussion about this fire both on this blog & in SB. And digusted at some who have commented elsewhere only to ask why this fire isn't out yet. I think we've seen some heroic efforts in turning this fire away from SB & yet hardly anyone seems to be grateful for what could have been a huge diaster (& it isn't over yet by any means). For a reality check see the photos on today's story by Ray Ford at the Independent online.

Yes, sadly most of the comments about the firefighters have been part of complaints about the mayor and the city council, with irrelevant comparisons to the blue line. It's tragic that the brave and valiant firefighters, and the fire itself, are being used by some as a political football.

I have seen the interviews with firefighters saying they are just doing their job.

You may just be doing your job but you are doing a job that takes you away from your homes, friends and families so that others may remain safely with theirs.

If more people would just do their jobs with the dedication, team work and can do attitude displayed by the firefighting crews imagine what the world could be like.

To all the firefighters and support staff working to control and put out the Zaca fire Thank You! You are all Heroes in my eyes.

Just in case it's been missed, here's another way to thank the firefighters, form the SB County Fire Department website:

We would like to thank all of the individuals and businesses who have expressed their desire to show their appreciation of the Firefighters who are working so hard on this difficult fire. The Wildland Firefighters Association supports Firefighters and their families and strives to take care of the fallen and injured. Visit their website at http://www.wffoundation.org/ or call 208-336 2996 for more details.
