Council Inauguration
Congrats to Grant House, Iya Falcone, Roger Horton and Marty Blum on their inauguration today.
Also, best wishes to Dr. Dan in his "retirement" -- no matter what you think about his stances on issues, he is a gentleman and a scholar.

Many people liked Dr. Dan's stance of issues and the balance he provided to an otherwise left tilting council. He will be missed.
It's too bad we have to lose a moderating component because of an artificial rule. The voters should be able to elect their representatives.
And where was our Mayor going last night with her history lesson?
Moderating component?
Yes, I fully agree.
A numbers thing who disrespects the human thing.
Sara---on the topic of local officials--why no mention of the article yesterday on Janet Wolf's campaign kickoff?
are we going to ignore the 2nd District on these pages or only focus on certain candidates?
I didn't mention the article on Janet because I had limited time yesterday; and, as far as I was concerned her announcement came with the Capps endorsement. An announcement is a little open ended as a topic as well. I am sure she will be the topic of much discussion over the coming months.
In terms of ignoring the 2nd District -- you must not have seen much of the posts and comments in December. They were practically all about the 2nd District whether or not comments were on topic.
There will of course be more opportunities to discuss the 2nd District -- it's a long campaign.
There this blog goes again. Name calling.
I wouldn't call Dr. Dan Secord, an accomplished physician who has delivered over 6,000 babies (including three for the Mayor), "a numbers thing who disrespects the human thing."
So sensitive, you know I think the posters to this blog are just taking their cues from the editorial page editor of the daily paper.
“made scientists”
“red ink mayor”
“sbcan’t”
Oh yes who just happens to be a big fan of Secord.
not a dan fan. yet he will be missed, not always his style but his honestly. secord is the totaly non-politican. no spin - no bs - that is why he cannot win the second - he does not sugar coat. just what you want in a doctor but not the best on the political beat where das is a better model.
also janet and jimmy did not do their effort any favor attacking secord today - go das - it is yours for the losing
Three paragraphs from a letter to her supporters from Marty Blum:
"The next election is in June, 2006. I am joining three of my colleagues (Roger Horton, Grant House, Helene Schneider) on City Council in supporting Das Williams for 2nd District Supervisor. We have all pledged to keep positive in this campaign and hope that the best person will win. You will not hear any of us saying negative things about other candidates or about the people who are supporting them.
I personally have enjoyed getting to know Das over the past two years he has been on Council. He is bright, energetic, and committed to the same ideals that you and I are. His understanding of neighborhood matters and the environment is amazing. We would be well-served by Das as 2nd District Supervisor.
Below you will find an invitation to his announcement next week. You are all welcome. If you are supporting a different candidate, that is the way democracy works best---Each of us picking the best person for the job, and we can agree to disagree. We have to remember that after the election we will all be working together to make Santa Barbara the best it can be."
PS. That formal announcement will be on Tuesday, January 17, 12:15 on More Mesa, specifically, at the end of Mockingbird Lane.
Anyone expecting local Democrats to pull together after last Fall's awful Council campaign got their answer in Josh Molina's article today. What a pitiful spectacle. A pox on all of you. Your egos are far more important than the issues you say you care about. Please, please, all of you, get it together or go away.
The common denominator in the nasty tone of last Fall's Council campaign and the current fracture is: Das. Hopefully people will recognize that fact before ALL the good work of the last twenty years to build a progressive base in Santa Barbara has been eroded.
To call Dan an environmentalist is to attack the english language, not his campaign. Dan should just be who he is, not try to be like a democrat.
because... uh, you know... only Democrats can be Environmentalists....
Teddy Roosevelt and Richard Nixon were two of the most pro-environment American Presidents ever, and the most enviro for any Republican President. State and local politics unfortunately are a different story about environmentalism.
And where does is the definition of environmental equal anti business anti redevelopment?
Envionmentalism is not the issue it is social engenerring and anti-capitialism.
Not one grenn field has been developed in a long time in santa barbara - so the big environmental issues are how many bedrooms you can add to your 1200 sq foot 1.5 million dollar home.
the real environmental issues are recyling land fills (secord has been the leader in the city and county). transprotation solutions - again secord has been the voice of reason.
and oh you are so right secord did vote to allow your neighbor to add a bedroom for a new child.
santa barbara poltical environmentalism is a joke today
Um...you mean city staff right? last I heard SB was a charter city. Staff makes recommendations and council approves. Dan's environmentalism consists of approving homes in sensitive habitat for endangered species, voting for time share condos and basketball courts on the waterfront, screwing the steelhead trout, approving developments that are right on top of creeks, etc et c etc.
Oh and on transportation he hasn't done much of anything other than stay out of Helene, Roger and Marty's way. But he sure never saw a project that he didn't like or an EIR that he could stand!
okay mr anonymous 12:42 AM name the homes on sensitive habitat for endangered species, the homes on top of creeks and the specifics about the steelhead, ect ect.
otherwise what you say is hot air. you have no real facts.
secord did not ever vote without at least three other so called progressives and most of time 5 or 6.
right now your attacks are pure fiction or attack politics.
we await your facts.
oh, forgot to say....
there are your facts. I await your spin.
still waiting.......
still waiting . . . . . . . .
and waiting
what are we waiting for now?
Let's handicap the primary race. Who has Joe hired - anyone know? Janet is a bit handicapped with her hired help, but Das must be planning on doing his own with the team he created. It is like Buttney II, or lets lose again. It will be fun to watch the intellectually challenged take on the emotionally challenged. We could call it Butt Bowl II.
I don't know, I think James Kyriaco, Janet Wolf's campaign manager did a pretty good job putting Roger Horton in 1st place in the last city council election. And oh yes in 2001 James put Roger in the #2 spot which was only a few hundred votes behind the #1 spot - Iya Falcone, with only half the money she spent.
I love James. What a great job he did in electing Roger. Sold Roger's soul to Das for an endorsement and then ran even though Roger, stand for nothing - have no friends and have not opponents - did not need Das - why not get it and then trade the favor.
The challenge is that Das saw James a weak and unable to help him win and did not engage him. So James, who was Das and Roger's patsy in attacking Iya now has to go to work with Iya for the Iya and Rose clone - Ms. Wolf.
Roger, Jame's only candidate is now on the other side.
The worm turns for those who live in the dirt.
Das knew you were worthless and hired those who could win for him.
We knew Janet was weak and was worthless and left the Iya camp for Das.
The worm turns.
sounds like somebody been doin a little bit of boozin...
Roger sure seemed to have a good campaign with such a "worthless" campaign manager.
Can somebody please enlighten me why Das is soooooo great? People are attacking Janet Wolf saying that she has no experience. What experience does Das have other than his years on the council?
Gee, I sure hope Das has secured his win by only hiring people that have worked on winning campaigns.
Das is good because he is not afraid to speak out and force others to be respondsible. Some say he has changed the city council by his actions. I agree - and for the better. Everyone on the SB council knows if they play games Das will bust it wide open.
Janet is a go along to get along and attacks from the cheap seats. She will not hold Joe and Joni responsible and will drive Brooks further north. Joe has already stated that her remarks in her opening statement attacking him without ever meetings him does not stand well for relationships.
If you think Rose has done well, Janet will do even better and killing representation of Noleta and Goleta.
Das will be strong and will not snipe at the north county crew he will make them stand accountable with bold moves and strong statements.
yea. Das just snipes behind their backs.
oh give me a break janet and das are useless. the three north county supervisors will ignore them - we will have no representation whatsoever - with janet or das we will have either a voice yelling loud to position for the next poltical move or a nice women who will put off the other supervisors to the point that noleta will be the dumping ground for everything they do not want
