Newspaper Errors

Interesting article by Jerry Roberts today on errors in the newspaper. Worth a read just to see what his approach to it all is.

In related news, we received a comment yesterday that our "whipping boy", Travis Armstrong will be gone from the paper by the end of the year. Not much more behind the comment than that -- whether they were reading tea leaves or just guessing. Still, there was a visit from the News-Press server yesterday to Blogabarabara at about the same time. Do we have a Deep Throat at the newspaper?

We'll see....

Update 1/1/06: I've been able to confirm one of the comments on this post that it was Jim Farr who resigned from the now News-Press owned paper, The Valley Voice, saying: “It didn’t work out like I hoped,” said Farr. “But there’s no animosity – just a difference of opinion.”

"... visit from the News-Press server ... at about the same time." "Deep Throat"? Watergate stands for the press holding government accountable, which is what the News-Press does. Two examples are the sheriff's council news stories and the editorials about the soon-to-be-one-party city government. Rather than Watergate, Sara's opening post is closer to a grassy knoll conspiracy. (Tracking servers?) The last five of six opening posts have been about Travis Armstrong. This obsession means that if Armstrong leaves News-Press this blog loses its intellectual touchstone and could be over. In attacking Armstrong, Sara does what she accuses Armstrong of doing, maybe without realizing it. Let's try something else: rather than mainly writing about Armstrong or about drinking vodka with Carlos can we instead discuss original and worthwhile community issues?

I read in the newspaper last week that it's Jim Farr who's leaving. Rather than spreading rumors here, why not check the facts with a quick call or email to the paper?

Examining server traffic? Sounds like George Bush and the NSA.

Jim Farr leaving is probably closer to the truth...as for the Deep Throat comments, vodka with Carlos, etc. It was a joke. If one had read comments last week they'd understand.

Blogabarbara was started because of Armstrong's editorials and we have and will continue to have worthwhile discussions of other issues as well.

The News-Press editorial section does not keep government accountable when they do not tell the whole story. The articles of the Sheriff's Council were by reporters who I and most people concerned about the News-Press have no beef with.

Part of the reason for this morning's post is to see if anyone had more information -- and perhaps they do in reading above.

People who live in glass houses...

Instead of just "CLOSER to the truth," if accuracy is really important to this blog I believe Armstrong's email address is in the paper for simple fact checking.

Then perhaps discussion can get off the sideshow and turn to the promised worthwhile issues.

I'm informed that Travis isn't going anywhere. Anything more important to discuss, or should we just keep hacking over false rumors?

Hmmm, News-Press server visiting?! LOL - I don't think that is possible to determine. If so, how did you tell - or was it a DT at the N-P telling you there was a visit?

Like anyone with a blog or a web site, I can check statistics on where traffic is coming from. In 99% of the cases, it's going to say "cox.net" or "aol.com" or "earthlink.net" -- the News-Press runs their own web server that gets their employees on the Internet at work -- so it says newspress.com.

One viewing statistics for any web site can tell where a visit came from but not who was visiting. The News-Press server has shown up on our statistics every day for months, for instance, but I would have no idea whether it was a reporter or an editor or a paper delivery person.

Your anonymity is assured -- where you are connecting from is not. As probably 10s of thousands of people in our area use cox.net, for instance, anonymity is certain.

I wouldn't have made the post today if there wasn't the correlation between the post time and the server traffic. You might also notice I mentioned "tea leaves" and "guessing" -- I don't consider that rumour spreading. For all I know, it's Armstrong himself playing a game with us...thus the "we'll see" at the very end.

Sara says Travis is responsible for the very existence of her blog.

No Travis, no blog.

No blog, no obsession.

No obsession, no poring over server statistics and matching up the time of posts, a la George Bush and the NSA...
