Community Post: Listen to My Words

Here's a list of quotes that was anonymously given to me. It's a very interesting to read them in chronological order and see where we are today. The author says they culled them from News-Press archives which mainly consisted of messages from Ms. McCaw printed in the News-Press.

=======================================
I find these interesting because her actions are in direct contradiction to what she keeps telling the community.

Here are the quotes:

"... I plan to leave the day-to-day management and editorial direction of our paper to the professionals who run it. An essential reason for buying the News-Press is to preserve its independence and integrity." 7-22-2000

"...I will continue to leave it up to the newsroom to make the news judgments on which you, our readers, depend." 5-27-2001

"Our strength, however, continues to be the people who work at the paper. They are part of our community and work hard to provide you with the news you need to keep informed..." 1-1-2005

"As always, I appreciate hearing your thoughts on improving the newspaper." 1-1-2005

"...we firmly believe that "the best is yet to be" for the Santa Barbara News-Press." 7-13-2006

"I respect the traditions of journalism and believe that the best way to run a paper is to hire good people and let them do their jobs, and that is exactly what I am doing." 7-19-2006

"To make the News-Press an even more professionally and personally rewarding place to work, I welcome your comments, recommendations and feedback so we can have an open dialogue to work collectively and collaboratively as we further improve the quality, coverage and accuracy of our paper." 7-19-2006

"We are in the process of hiring a new editor who is a strong journalist with impeccable credentials to be the buffer between the newsroom and the publisher." 7-25-2006

"While I don't believe that union representation is in the best interests of our employees, the paper or this community, I respect our employees' rights to make their own decisions." 7-25-2006

"I will always do what I think is best for the News-Press and our community." 7-25-2006

"I will personally continue to work in 2007 to ensure that you receive the best local coverage that can be provided, not only this year, but beyond." 1-1-2007

For some reason "Liar, liar, pants on fire" kept running through my mind as I read those quotes. Wonder why...

I read this, as well as the leaked memo posted at The Indy, and I can't help but think that things are not going to end well.

If the rulings start piling up against her in those NLRB hearings, I think she'll scuttle the paper as a big FU to all those who oppose her. There's no way she'll allow anyone else to be right. There are no apologies coming - she'll sink the ship and move on.

To see someone play with our media with such callous disregard is infuriating - like she's playing some real-life game of Sim-City, with real people's lives hanging in the balance.

Unfortunately, I think this is a systemic problem in Santa Barbara. The Film Festival was expensive, concerts are expensive (Sonny Rollins was $65, and it was not sold out).... the whole town is catered to a small but very wealthy minority.

It's just frustrating, frustrating, frustrating.

That what I like about this Blog is people that post with facts to back up their statments.
This is a well rounded blog. It is ture there is a lot about Wendy and the News Press but it is a BIG story and affects so many people at so many differant levels. This story is one for the history books... oh and there is so much in black and white to provide the facts.
What a down fall.
It was such a nice news paper. Hope someone is able to prvide the people with a newspaper soon.

Is someone trying to imply that these promises in the Wendy notes to readers are not coming true?
