The News-Press tosses out eight hard news reporters and replaces them with ... what?! An aging, Montecito-centric royalty-obsessed gossip columnist? Are the Baron and Baroness von Wendynator staring into the mirror again?

The real test for the News-Press comes this summer when local prep sport coverage stops. I feel the only reason why many people still subscribe to the NP is because of high school sports. When that goes away for the summer, then the readership numbers will be tested.

I saw the print version of today's News-Press and was astounded that the longest article - on the FRONT PAGE no less - was the in-depth account of the new gossip columnist. Ugh.

And then I turned the page and was dismayed to see that their coverage of the Record-A-Thon for the Recording for the Blind & Dyslexic makes it sound like the Record-A-Thon is over. The Record-A-Thon continues through Saturday! They still need volunteers! Please call 681-0531 to volunteer your time for this great organization.

Or, at least that's what you are hoping.

This afternoon, on my walk home on Romaine Drive , I noticed in a driveway a SBNP. It seemed very small. It's plastic bag didn't appear damaged and was tightly sealed. The residents who's driveway it resides are nice, somewhat self obsorbed, if not ditzy, and eccentric....I doubt they even know they are paying for this gossip column.
