Strickland and Tobacco Money: Big Deal or No?

Some neighbors of ours in Westlake are protesting State Senate candidate Tony Strickland's involvement in $50,000 in tobacco money. Sorry to my friends at The Indy, but is this worse than The Santa Barbara Independent accepting American Spirit ads? As for Strickland, would a truly green entrepreneur do this?

I tend to be a bit more libertarian about this -- they have every right to give and he has every right to accept. That also means we have every right to notice:

PROTEST AGAINST $50,000 TOBACCO DONATION TO VCRCC & TONY STRICKLAND FOR STATE SENATE

We will be protesting the Ventura County Republican Central Committee's acceptance of a $50,000 contribution from Altria (Philip Morris) on behalf of Tony Strickland. We view a contribution of this size as very significant and a further indication that the tobacco industry will continue to attempt to buy politicians in California. No other single company is responsible for more deaths of American citizens. Mitt Romney, keynote speaker at the Strickland fundraiser and on the shortlist for Republican Vice President, should speak out about tobacco and the cancer it continues to spread throughout our Nation.

Per the Anonymous comment above:

First, it is ANONYMOUS

Second, it pretends that the Ventura County Republican Committee will not pass through that Big Tobacco money directly to Strickland.

Third, the Star article is about Strickland and the Republicans, not Hannah Beth Jackson, but certainly deflecting to her is convenient for the commenter.

Fourth, the commenter also is calling the Star a liar, as if it were the SB Newspress or something noncredible like that.

for context -- this was the anonymous comment I should have kept off:

Hannah-Beth Jackson should be ashamed. She demonized Strickland for taking money from Altria when she has accepted campaign donations from candidates and elected officials who have done the same as has the democratic party. In fact, Strickland's campaign hasn't taken a dime from Altria. The VC Republican Party has but the VC Star accused him anyway. The liberal smear machine is in full gear. More people see right through it than you might think.

Here's another worth including for the same reason:

Actually, anonymous Strickland accepted a $3,600 contribution from Altria (Philip Morris) on July 30, 2007 for this race. Make sure your facts are straight before you post. Your candidate is bought and paid for. Hannah-Beth will not accept tobacco money, and will not vote the way Philip Morris wants her to.

Strickland should be very easy to beat. More power to HBJ for taking on what looked like and impossible district to win. She created it and hopefully it will be hers to win. Go Hannah-Beth.

What is truly amazing is that democrats believe only republicans are “bought and paid for”. HBJ is a politician first then an ideolog. She will be no less influenced by corporate money than anyone else.
For those of you dems out there still in your sleepy little idealistic fog consider this:
The five richest Americans are all democrats and heavy contributors to lib causes.
One of them made his billions trashing the Indonesian money market and sent their economy into a tail spin. Tried to do the same with Britton and almost did.
Another made his fortune as a major spectator, the epitome of greed.
The rest are captains of major U.S. corporations.
So why have the most greedy selfish exploiters of capitalism thrown all their weight behind the ultra left? Because they know you bumbling naïve nit wits would never suspect them as being greedy and manipulative and exploitive, because they support your cause. They also know that European style socialism is the best political insurance they have at capping your economic growth for their benefit. They got theirs now close the gates (hey that sounds a lot like Santa Barbara, doesn’t it!)
Mind you this is not a pro right or pro republican rant, God knows they have just as many problems with greed, exploitation and power madness, its just a wake up call to the aging flower children that your hippy dippy socialist ideology got sold to the highest bidder 30 years ago while you were still stoned. Time to wake up and see the real world kids. Those that have it want to keep it and they’ll use your dopy naïveté to get it done. BTW, they do the same thing to the idiots on the right who don’t look past their nose and blindly follow out of ideological faith.
