Jerry Prevails, Wendy Stalls, Bold Prediction for 2009

A new development in the continuing saga of the News-Press Mess yesterday awarded former editor Jerry Roberts the prevailing party in a $10 million suit (which ended up only possibly covering his legal fees -- amount TBD) only to see News-Press owner Wendy McCaw counter by trying to throw out the arbitrator off the case. With some of the arbitration information only just now becoming public, The Santa Barbara Independent says the arbitrator called McCaw's legal tactics “scorched earth,” “take-no-prisoners,” and “go-for-broke.”

The News-Press apparently wrote an article about their actions but it sits behind the pay wall of their web site. Robert's attorney Andrine Smith called the article a "shoddy piece of propaganda disguised as a news story" -- no surprise to BlogaBarbara readers who have been following the News-Press Mess over the last few years.

Seen within the rather green light of this story, one has to wonder whether the recent layoffs at the News-Press are a result of not just poor business decisions, but poor past personnel decisions on the part of Ampersand Publishing.

What will be next with the pending February 29, 2009 National Labor Relations Board hearing about using temps as reporters? Coupled with a noticeable drop in advertising and editorial -- my bold prediction for 2009 is that the News-Press will be sold at a bargain.

Note at 7 AM: I edited the post due to an initial misunderstanding on my part of the award in the case....although the suit was for $10 million, Roberts will only get his attorney fees covered in an amount yet to be determined.

Although Jerry was determined to be the "prevailing party" he was not awarded $10 million in damages. Only his attorney's fees in an amount still to be determined.

Keep predicting that she will sell the paper and she will dig her heels and her entire self in deeper and deeper.

She has no interest, clearly, in just enjoying life and her wealth and helping others less fortunate than herself (other than the "baron") but relishes the on-going fight and the opportunities to prove others wrong.

Too bad, with so many aching needs, including her apparent true interest, wildlife and the environment.

Before my New Years resolution kicks in...any chance Ampersand Holdings were heavily vested with Madoff.

Got to agree with CRB... Keep a fire sale rumor going... It's about money and power... and proving it's not about money... why else would a animal loving libertarian let their publication bless a canidate with a moose kiliing from aerial platorm vice president...

Really, it can't be about moral, and morality, or the truth (which is relative, Wendy).
Think, Arthur tossed aside what was perceived as a long-lived good relationship with Barney for the White One. Oh wait... he's all about money...

At least she's still giving us plenty of stuff to speculate about. Like her rumored breakup with Arthur -- mentioned on a couple of blogs -- just three days before Dr. Laura announced she'd written her final column for the N-P.

Does anyone know why Jerry did not sue over the computer issue? I Hope Jerry's payment helps his financial condition.

Published in Newspaper, so it has to be determined to be libelous (sp?) and not just plain stupidity...
ie no lawyer wants to take a paper to court... At least until she pisses off Capello.

NP owned the computer, so it could search it... NP staff found information... so it turned it over...
