Bias in the Newsroom? Mayor Gets Cold Shoulder

Craig Smith points out that the News-Press failed to cover the State of the City speech Mayor Blum gave last Thursday. In years past, there had been a photographer as well as a front page article on the speech. According to Smith's post, a News-Press reporter finally committed to cover it after watching a rerun on government access television.

Community Question: Where's the Love, Wendy?

The Newsuppress is running a story on life on the home front in WWII. Wonder how they thought that up?

Read it and weep -- they should at least give me and my frequent reader a bit of recognition with a a mention as a source or inspiration considering our post just a few days ago.

I thought Craig Smith (where he reports today that Jerry Roberts is in arbitration) and I were IP blocked and there were video cameras watching every reporter's every move. Guess it didn't work and I'm left without being seen in print. Where's the love, Wendy?

Steepleton and PUEBLO

I've gotten several emails from readers who question Scott Steepleton's article this morning on the Alex Pulido recall effort in Carpinteria. In it he refers to PUEBLO as "a group calling itself People United for Economic Justice Building Leadership Through Organizing". A group calling itself? Isn't that reserved for organizations that may not have filed for 501(c)4 or 3 status? maybe they are just a couple of people who don't have an official organization name yet?

PUEBLO is far from being some kind of a loose, autonomous collective or even a self-perpetuating autocracy (see Monty Python's Holy Grail) with little organization or history. I guess their Executive Director Ana Rizo was called both Ms. and Miss as well....and I'm pretty sure she is older than 18. Any bias in the newsroom? Maybe, maybe not but it seems to me a long standing group like Pueblo should be shown a little more respect by the News-Press.

The Women's Literary Festival was written up twice in the News-Press before the Feb. 24 event. The first time was Feb. 11, in a books column; the second was a Feb. 21 story about the festival.

In neither article was the name of author and guest speaker Starshine Roshell.

Another example for the SDLG Center for Union Busting Studies - It seems that banishing bias is only applicable if you want to wage a PR campaign against a union or get rid of reporters who voted for it....
